I would say that the author takes us to those days of Chozha Kingdom, which was one among the Greatest /Bravest Kingdoms in the world, in ancient times. I think this was a literary style of the 50's. The novel narrates the story of the Chozhas and their beautiful lives in the 11th century. The first four books are points of a complex twisted web which gets neatly correlated and connected in the fifth book. This series kindled my historical fiction interests and thinking of next book already Kalki is great writer. True, it would have been interesting if Kalki weaved in more historical facts and presented a social & political discourse along the way, but I think the book's immense popularity is due to the emotional aspects of the story and the memorable characters :). I couldn't describe in words how this novel series had moved me since I've started reading it; What an excellent story! Phew! At various points in the story, I have loved/hated the same characters, laughed with them, walked through deep dark forests, travelled to Srilanka, plotted with them, felt pity for characters I wanted dead from start, loved characters that I thought were inconsequential to the story.
