The dirt factor makes this capless stuff about the most stupid thing that OEM's have come up with yet. I clean the flap as much as I can and have the dealer clear the light.
I had my gas stolen out of my new ford fusion. But to suggest that people shouldn’t be allowed to pump their own gas or shouldn’t be expected to do it because of how they’re dressed, well that’s just pathetic. Don’t try to add injector cleaner or a gas can without incerting the “special” spout that comes with the vehicle.
Like my Acura. When a fuel nozzle is inserted, the nozzle pushes these doors, which are designed to assure the system will remain airtight through years of use. Haven’t used that yet. Some of us drive in dry dusty areas and everytime there was literally 1 inch of fine dust right on the filler cap. I doubt it will be an expensive repair at all. I'm curious if you went to purchase a car, new, with this capless gas tank can you have the dealer convert to a capped tank or is this just unfeasible for the dealer or anybody else to attempt to modify???
I have a 2009 Mazda Tribute which is under Ford and my mechanic and also the smog test guy said I needed to go to the dealership to get the neck replaced.
For my 2018 Jeep GC they just cut the rubber hose that runs under the car and siphoned my tank.

Had a buddy at work that had that happen to him. There are a lot of advantages to having a capless fuel filler. But after reading this thread, I'm glad my 2016 Colorado has a filler cap.

Ford is not the the only company using them, I see them on many of the cars I review. The idea is designed to simplify fill ups, reduce emissions (evaporating gasoline), reduce incidents of using the wrong type of fuel, and protect vehicles from theft.
I don’t find the lack of a gas cap a major issue, however I think there should be a release inside the car to open it which would be a security measure against the possibility of being vandalized and gas syphon. It is hard to get the can nozzle out because of the way the filler neck is engineered, it gets stuck and is a pain to get free.
